New York, NY, March 12, 2015 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today commended John Jay College of Criminal Justice President Jeremy Travis for his immediate attention and swift actions in confronting several hate messages found on campus.

According to the college, over the past week, anti-Semitic, anti-gay and racist graffiti were discovered in restrooms and a classroom. In a communique to the John Jay College community, President Travis shared his deep concern over the incidents, and outlined the institution’s response.

“The manner in which President Travis and the John Jay College administration have handled the news of these horrific messages found on campus has been exemplary,” said Evan R. Bernstein, ADL New York Regional Director. “Not only has the College quickly and swiftly addressed the incidents, they have made clear that this type of behavior ‘has no place in our community.’”

Mr. Bernstein added, “No student on campus should ever have to encounter such vivid hateful imagery. We welcome the College’s steps to establish forums to discuss the negative impact of what ensued and offer our full support and resources in the wake of this incident.”
