Statement from Regional Director Scott Richman on the 2023 FBI Hate Crime Data

  • September 24, 2024

“We are deeply concerned about yesterday’s release of the 2023 FBI hate crime data. Reported single-bias anti-Jewish hate crimes rose to 1,832 incidents, a sharp increase of 63 percent from 2022, and the highest number ever recorded by the FBI since it began collecting data in 1991. In our region, total reported hate crimes increased by 11% in New Jersey and by 10% in New York. Furthermore, we are alarmed by the number of agencies in both New York and New Jersey that that did not participate in FBI hate crime reporting for 2023. According to available data, only 115 of 564 participating agencies in New York and 224 of 488 in New Jersey appear to have submitted any incident reports. Agencies in major cities like Newark, Paterson and Syracuse reported zero hate crimes, likely signaling significant underreporting. Hate crimes are message crimes and uniquely impact entire communities. Without comprehensive data reporting, we cannot effectively assess the scope of the problem or meaningfully address it.” – Scott Richman, ADL New York/New Jersey Regional Director
