New York, NY, December 9, 2015 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) was alarmed by a violent assault of a Muslim store owner in Astoria, Queens and the recent rise in anti-Muslim violence and rhetoric across the country.

According to reports, Sarker Haque, the owner of Fatima Food Mart on 21st Avenue in Astoria was punched repeatedly by an assailant, Piro Kolvani, who entered his store on December 5 yelling that he wanted to “kill Muslims.” Kolvani was subsequently arrested and charged with assault.

“This horrible attack, apparently motivated by anti-Muslim animus, is one of a string of attacks against the Muslim community in recent weeks as troubling rhetoric continues to intensify,” said Evan R. Bernstein, ADL New York Regional Director. “We are deeply dismayed by this incident and alarmed by the uptick of Muslim individuals and Islamic centers across the country being singled out for violence.

“To the Muslim community in New York City and beyond: we stand with you in solidarity against hatred and scapegoating,” Mr. Bernstein added. “All crimes motivated by bias must be loudly condemned by all of our community and religious leaders and elected officials.”

ADL has voiced serious concern over the escalation of hostility against Muslims living in the U.S. in the wake of terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino motivated by Islamic extremism.
