ADL Expresses Concern Over Swastika In Williamsburg, Brooklyn

  • September 17, 2014

New York, NY, September 17, 2014 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today expressed concern over fliers in Williamsburg, Brooklyn adorned with swastikas along with the word “Uber” which means “over” in German and is also the name of a shared car service company. According to reports, fliers appeared on Bedford Avenue earlier this week with the word Uber written in a similar fashion as the logo of the company.

ADL welcomed the New York City Police Department’s (NYPD) probe into the incident.

Gregg M. Mashberg, ADL New York Regional Board Chair, and Evan R. Bernstein, ADL New York Regional Director, issued the following statement:

The posting of fliers with swastikas sends a horrific and troubling message of hate to the entire Williamsburg community and the entire city. We call on our city’s community and political leadership to once again unequivocally condemn such acts that instill fear in our neighborhoods.

The image of a swastika is particularly troubling and creates heightened anxiety within the Jewish community, especially as it prepares for the upcoming high holidays.

We are encouraged that the NYPD is pursuing this investigation as a potential hate crime and are hopeful that those responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
