New York, NY, December 7, 2015 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today said it was troubled by the toppling of a large menorah in Carl Schurz Park in the Yorkville neighborhood of Manhattan.

On December 6, the menorah was pushed over and damaged following its lighting by rabbis from Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun and Chabad of the Upper East Side in celebration of the first night of Hanukkah.

“The desecration of one of the most recognizable Jewish symbols is abhorrent,” said Evan R. Bernstein, ADL New York Regional Director. “Often during the Jewish holidays, we unfortunately tend to see an uptick in anti-Semitic incidents. There is no cause for alarm, but it is always important to remain aware and vigilant.”

Mr. Bernstein added, “Particularly on Hanukkah – a festival in which Jews celebrate their victory in the fight for religious freedom – we are pained by this apparent act of hate.”

ADL recently expressed concern over anti-Semitic incidents that have taken place across the five boroughs, including two assaults, one in Brooklyn and another in Manhattan, as well as an incident of anti-Semitic harassment outside of a synagogue in Brooklyn.
