New York, NY, December 22, 2016 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today said it was disturbed by the attack on a Jewish man in Williamsburg, Brooklyn that reportedly took place on December 20.
Two teenage assailants allegedly pursued the victim while yelling “South Side Jew” and hurled chunks of ice in his direction. As the victim attempted to flee, he was hit in the back with one piece of ice and another hit his car.
“We are appalled that the victim of this crime was chased through the streets in fear solely because of his identity,” said Evan R. Bernstein, ADL New York Regional Director. “The imagery evoked by this assault is frightening and serves to foment anxiety during this divided time in our nation. We call on all New Yorkers to treat their neighbors with dignity and respect.”
ADL has established a new reporting mechanism where the public can report any anti-Semitic, racist or bigoted incidents, and encouraged social media users to promote the hashtag #ExposeHate. The League continues to monitor the proliferation of racist and anti-Semitic graffiti and vandalism in New York and across the country.
