New York, NY, December 28, 2017 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today expressed concern following several incidents in which anti-Semitic, racist and other offensive vandalism and graffiti have been discovered across Manhattan.
According to reports, there have been well over a dozen incidents, targeting three Upper East Side businesses, private apartments and other public spaces. The vandalism includes explicit anti-Semitic symbols, as well as, racist and other crude symbols. Police have released photos of suspects in both cases.
“This recent spate of hateful acts remind us that the fight against anti-Semitism is inextricably linked to the fight of all forms of hate, and therefore must be addressed in all our communities,” said ADL New York Regional Director Evan R. Bernstein in a statement.
“As we usher in the new year, we remain steadfast in our commitment to not allow such hateful acts to be normalized. We must continue to expose hate in all its forms. We are working with our leaders and coalition partners to make sure New York is no place for hate in 2018.” Bernstein continued.
“We strongly encourage anyone with information related to these incidents to contact their local precinct.”
In the first three quarters of 2017, ADL tracked 167 incidents of anti-Semitic vandalism across New York State as well as a 92% increase in anti-Semitic incidents in New York City. In the recent findings, Manhattan surpassed other NYC boroughs receiving the highest number of anti-Semitic incidents.
The Anti-Defamation League was founded in 1913 to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all. Today it is the world’s leading organization combating anti-Semitism, exposing hate groups, training law enforcement on hate crimes, developing anti-bias curricula for students, countering cyber-hate and relentlessly pursuing equal rights for all.
