New York, NY, October 13, 2019…ADL (the Anti-Defamation League) expressed deep concern about an alleged assault of a Jewish man in Crown Heights, Brooklyn in the afternoon of October 12. According to police and media reports, the victim was allegedly hit in the face by a man on a bicycle who called him a “dirty Jew’. This followed another incident the previous evening in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, where occupants of a car threw eggs at two Jewish passersby.
“We are alarmed and horrified by this alleged violent assault of a Jewish man on Shabbat,” said Evan R. Bernstein, ADL NY/NJ Regional Director. “After we witnessed several anti-Semitic incidents during the High Holidays these past weeks, and NYPD expanded its patrolling in the area, it is very concerning to see that anti-Semitic harassment and assaults continue to take place. We must continue to do more as New Yorkers to create a safe environment for the Jewish community in Brooklyn and end this disturbing trend once and for all. We are grateful for the NYPD Hate Crime Unit for investigating both these incidents.”
