The story of Bartali and the secret network he worked with stands in for the stories of thousands of Italians who risked their lives to save others from capture and death. As an entire continent was engulfed in a genocide which took the lives of most Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe (nearly 6 million people)\, more than 80 percent of Italy’s Jews survived. Bartali\, like most of the rescuers\, never sought recognition or reward. DESCRIPTION:The New York Region is proud to kick-off its Outreach Network series with An Evening with Christopher Wolf\, Co-Author of Viral Hate: Containing Its Spread on the Internet\, on Monday\, September 30th at 6:30 PM at New York’s legendary Cafe Wha. \nIn Viral Hate: Containing Its Spread on the Internet (Palgrave Macmillan\, June 2013)\, Abraham H. DESCRIPTION:The Bearing Witness™ Program is a unique professional development opportunity for Catholic school educators\, endorsed by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. \nThrough Bearing Witness\, participants explore the history of anti-Semitism\, from biblical times to modern day\, as well as Catholic teachings about Jews and Judaism.  Bearing Witness also educates Catholic school teachers about the vibrant history and culture of the Jewish people and is designed with the following goals in mind: \n\nTo examine some of the more sensitive\, complex and painful issues in Jewish experience\, Catholic-Jewish relations and modern history.\nTo consider sensitive topics such as anti-Semitism\, the role of the Church in the Shoah and today’s expressions of hatred towards Jews and Judaism\n  To provide Catholic school educators with strategies and resources necessary to implement and teach their students about the Holocaust and anti-Semitism.\nTo foster a partnership\, a sense of understanding\, and a connectedness between communities that had previously not been known.\nTo appreciate the connectedness between the Jewish people and the land of Israel and to understand the land of Israel.\n\nProgram costs are covered through the generous support of Erwin and Sandra Pearl. \nContact Lauren Steinberg at newyork@adl.org for more information and to apply.
