SUMMARY:Evening with an Author: Liza Wiemer
DESCRIPTION:Please join ADL New York/New Jersey on May 5th at 7:00PM ET for an “Evening with an Author” with award-winning educator and author\, Liza Wiemer. \nLiza Wiemer will share a behind-the-scenes look into the making of the award-winning novel\, The Assignment\, which was inspired by real events that took place in Oswego\, NY in 2017 as well as others around the country. A work of fiction\, its roots stem from extensive research\, historical and modern-day material\, providing a bridge between the past and the present. \nBeth Martinez\, ADL Education Director of Albany\, played an integral part in putting an end to the original assignment. She’ll present the work ADL did to make a positive difference. Liza’s presentation will delve into similar assignments like the one in the novel and their impact on students\, schools\, communities and the world as well as what it takes to empower our youth to be upstanders in the face of injustice. \nFor more information or questions\, please reach out to Jennifer Hwang at jhwang@adl.org. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n

SUMMARY:Youth Impactors in Activism
DESCRIPTION:Please join ADL NY/NJ for the first webinar in our Conversations for Change series\, featuring a conversation with ADL’s Impactors. Our student impactors will discuss what their activism looks like today\, and share how their experiences with ADL impacted their journey. \nADL’s Peer Training Program was created in the aftermath of the Crown Heights Riots\, when student leaders at Clara Barton High School were confused and intrigued about the racial tensions and the upheaval in their community. ADL was invited to facilitate a series of discussions around stereotypes\, bias and discrimination. These workshops became the pilot for our current Peer Training Program for high school students. \nThis past year\, these ADL Impactors had the opportunity to attend a civil rights themed mission to Selma\, Alabama\, and worked with student leaders around the country to develop the skills and advocacy tools that are needed to combat bias and catalyze change in their communities. \nWe hope you will join us for a meaningful conversation with these inspiring young leaders to hear about their experience with ADL\, what their activism looks like today\, and recommendations they have for future young leaders. \nThe webinar is for young individuals and families seeking ways to get further involved with ADL’s mission. \nFor more information\, please contact Kellianne Holland\, Assistant Education Director\, at kholland@adl.org. \nTo register click here.

SUMMARY:My Italian Secret: The Forgotten Heroes\, A Special Presentation
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL GUESTS\nElizabeth Bettina \nConsulting Producer of “My Italian Secret: The Forgotten Heroes”\nand Author of “It Happened in Italy: Untold Stories of How the People\nof Italy Defied the Horrors of the Holocaust” \n David Waren \nDirector of the Anti-Defamation League’s Education Division \nWould you risk your life to save a stranger and never talk about it? \n“My Italian Secret: The Forgotten Heroes” tells the story of sports idol Gino Bartali and other courageous Italians who carried out ingenious schemes to rescue Jews\, partisans and refugees from Nazi-occupied Italy. Gino Bartali is a sports legend; but his most daring triumph came when he risked his life over and over to save Jews threatened by Nazi extermination. The story of Bartali and the secret network he worked with stands in for the stories of thousands of Italians who risked their lives to save others from capture and death. As an entire continent was engulfed in a genocide which took the lives of most Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe (nearly 6 million people)\, more than 80 percent of Italy’s Jews survived. Bartali\, like most of the rescuers\, never sought recognition or reward. Few of those he helped knew his name or what role he played in their rescue. \nIn collaboration with the New York Region of the Anti-Defamation League and the Italian American Forum\, Morgan Stanley is proud to host the screenwriters and producers\, as well as Holocaust survivors from Italy to  share an important story of what happens when good people stand up to the face of evil. SUMMARY:NGPC Outreach Network Kick-Off: Viral Hate - Containing It's Spread on the Internet
DESCRIPTION:The New York Region is proud to kick-off its Outreach Network series with An Evening with Christopher Wolf\, Co-Author of Viral Hate: Containing Its Spread on the Internet\, on Monday\, September 30th at 6:30 PM at New York’s legendary Cafe Wha. \nIn Viral Hate: Containing Its Spread on the Internet (Palgrave Macmillan\, June 2013)\, Abraham H. Foxman and Christopher Wolf examine the epidemic of Internet hate and provide examples of the real harm online hate does to people and to society.  As they explain\, “Words of hate can easily turn into acts of hate.”  Foxman and Wolf expose how individuals and organizations from both the left and right\, emboldened by anonymity and without worrying about repercussions\, are freely spewing hateful vitriol on the Internet.  Mr. Wolf’s dynamic and engaging presentation will share how he and Mr. Foxman have exposed the threat that this unregulated flow of bigotry poses to the world\, exploring how social media companies are struggling to reconcile the demands of business with freedom of speech. To learn more about Chris Wolf\, click here. \nThe NGPC Outreach Network (NGPC ON) connects NGPC leaders\, Supporters and friends to the mission and work of ADL in the New York Region. Originally created by the Chicago region\, NGPC ON provides a forum to engage with experts and individuals who have been impacted by ADL’s work. From intimate parlor meetings to large gatherings\, NGPC ON balances the opportunity to learn about ADL in a fun\, welcoming and social environment. \nAdmission is free with drink specials available. Space is limited. \n \n
